14 Apr 2014 : Linnets join scarf tribute for 25th anniversary of Hillsborough
A RUNCORN Linnets scarf will be laid at Anfield tomorrow as part of a global tribute to the victims of Hillsborough – 25 years on.
It is among football club scarves from around the world forming the number 96 at the annual service in memory of the Liverpool fans, who died at the FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest on April 15th 1989.
Graham Evans, MP for Weaver Vale (whose constituency includes the Millbank Linnets Stadium) handed over the Linnets scarf on behalf of the club via the All Party Parliamentary Group for the Hillsborough disaster.
Five Halton people, four of them from Runcorn, lost their lives in what remains British football's biggest tragedy. As football paid its respects in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy, a Linnets scarf was left at the LFC stadium by Runcorn's England non-league international striker Mark Carter, who had been a spectator at the game himself.
