19 Aug 2015 : Five-goal Kurt Sherlock sets club FA Cup scoring record at Runcorn Linnets

Runcorn Linnets striker Kurt Sherlock's handful of goals in last night's 6-1 extra preliminary round home replay victory over Glasshoughton Welfare earned him a new club record for most goals in an FA Cup game.

He is only the second Linnets player to score five in a first-team competitive match since the club's formation in 2006 - the feat having been first achieved by fellow centre forward Paul Prescott in a 6-0 NWCL Challenge Cup third round victory over Eccleshall at the Millbank Linnets Stadium on Saturday, February 18th 2012.

The feat of four goals in a senior game has been achieved four times and by three different players – Thomas Lamb (twice), Paul Crewe and Ross McDowell – while the previous best solo scoring display for Runcorn Linnets in an FA Cup tie was three goals by Kev Towey.

Sherlock's achievement is made all the more remarkable in that fans, who saw the state of his ankle after he had been forced off by injury in Saturday's original tie, would have given him very little, if any, chance of even playing in the second meeting at The Millbank Linnets Stadium.

It is a tribute to the player's powers of recovery and determination along with the excellent and extensive treatment he received from club physiotherapist Carl Rutter that he was passed fit to play.

Sherlock had also scored the opener in the weekend's 2-2 draw at Glasshoughton.

For the record, club statistician Mark Buckley presents Runcorn Linnets' new updated individual scoring records at first-team level:

Five in a game:

Paul Prescott - 18.2.12 v Eccleshal (League Challenge Cup) Kurt Sherlock - 18.8.15 v Glasshoughton Welfare (FA Cup)

Four in a game:

Thomas Lamb - 12.10.06 v Witton Albion Reserves, home (Mid Cheshire Cup) Thomas Lamb -1.12.07 v Abbey Hey (NWCFL) Paul Crewe (inc 3 pens) - 10.8.09 v New Mills (NWCFL) Ross McDowell - 9.2.13 v Silsden (NWCFL)

Best individual scoring performances by a Runcorn Linnets player in an FA Cup tie:

Kurt Sherlock (5) - 18.8.15 v Glasshoughton Welfare Kev Towey (3) - 16.8.14 v Rochdale Town
